Hey everyone, I’m an American Latina with a very mixed background (Puerto Rico, Mexico, El Salvador) who is currently learning Spanish. To be clear, I’ve been learning for about 8 years, though I only really started being able to express myself, understand basically anyone speak, etc. about 3 years ago. I haven’t taken a test, but if I had to guess, I’d say I’m at a B2 level. I study Spanish in college and I speak it a little in my household, and I’m wondering if choosing a dialect is the move. I’ve heard it has accelerated learning for some people and gave them a sense of identity within the Spanish speaking community. My Spanish is pretty neutral and I’m familiar with slang from a lot of places, so I get tripped up on how to choose what to say or how to pronounce words sometimes. How do I go about choosing a dialect? Have any of you made this transition?
