Help with understanding tense in this sentence: Le entregué el libro y le pedí que se lo diera a Catalina.

Hello all,

I am reading a book called El Libro Salvaje, and came across this sentence: Le entregué [el libro] y le pedí que se lo diera a Catalina.

This sentence appeared when the main character brought a book to his friend Catalina's mom.

I understood the sentence as saying [I brought the book to her and asked her to give it to Catalina.]

I am trying to understand why [diera] is the correct tense for the verb dar here. Is it to match the pedí (past tense of pedir)?
