Is it offensive to call a young person “señor” ?

In English, I call my guy friends sir as a joke. Not all the time tho just if I feel like being funny. I’ll be like “Hello sir how are you” or “Yes sir” just to be funny and playful you know ?

Last night I was talking with a Hispanic friend of mine and I said “Si señor” like I do with English friends to be funny, and he got SUPER offended. He almost yelled at me “DON’T CALL ME THAT” he was actually mad. This happened before with a different hispanic friend too, he didn’t get mad but he told me not to call him that.

People call me ma’am for fun and I don’t care. Most of my English-speaking friends don’t care either. Is this a thing in Spanish? Is it not taken as a joke ??
