Que tenga un buen día

I have been mistakingly saying “hay un buen día” for about a year now, but somebody finally corrected me and told me it should “que tenga un buen día”.

I guess my question is, what is the purpose of “que tenga” in this phrase, and how does it differ from “hay”?

Muchas gracias
