Question about usted/ustedes conjugation

I understand that usted is a more polite or formal form of tu. However, I don't understand why in the conjugation chart it is listed with el and ella and uses the verb for those. If usted means you, why is it not usted eres, or ustedes sois? A word that means you but uses the verb for he/she just doesn't make any sense to me. Hopefully someone can explain this to me or let me know if I'm not the only one who finds this confusing 🙂
