“Spain Spanish” versus Miami Spanish?

I attend uni in Miami, which has a population that is about 70% Hispanic. Naturally, I thought learning Spanish would be a great way to explore the local culture gain the skills to navigate many situations, so I’ve been taking Spanish classes. I’m currently at the end of my 3rd consecutive semester of learning Spanish and feel like I have a decent grasp of the language so far.

But my understanding is that the Spanish taught in the classroom differs greatly from what’s spoken here (by predominantly Cubans or people from South America). Does anyone know what the key differences are? How can I adapt my speech patterns and comprehension skills to match this dialect so I can communicate more effectively here?
