What is the difference between "me he dado cuenta" and "he notado"?

"Me he dado cuenta" seems to translate literally to "I have given myself account", but it seems to be the standard way to say "I have noticed". However, "he notado" is the conjugatjon of the verb "notar" which should theoretically translate directly to "I have noticed".

Are both correct? Is "he notado" technically correct but rarely used? Is one (or both) of them wrong for some reason?

Thanks in advance.
