When to choose between using the ‘passive se’ vs using ‘fue’ when talking about objects. (Also, past participle verbs turning to adjectives?)

Why do we sometimes use the 'passive se' and other times we use 'fue', and also what is going on with 'descubierto/as' here, clearly the verb is the past participle and also matching gender/ number but why? What are the fundamental differences between the two examples below that we would sometimes choose to use passive 'se', and other times use 'fue + pp verb in agreement with gender/number' ? or can you use them interchangably? Thanks
