Why is "unas vacaciones" always plural?

Based on what I'm seeing in Duolingo, vacaciones is always plural.

As an English speaker, the literal translation sounds odd…"Ella toma unas vacaciones" = She is taking some vacations. Why doesn't Spanish use "una vacacion" or similar? Thanks!
